A Practical Guide to Haggling

July 11th, 2010

So you want to sell  your car, and fast. My past experiences have always involved their fair share of haggling. Haggling is one of the most powerful tools at the buyer's disposal. It is just as powerful for sellers who know how to use it. As a seller the idea is to make sure your buyer understands what sort of value for money you are offering so they do not try and swindle you out of too much of your asking price. If I want to sell my car fast I will always set my price slightly higher than the amount I actually want for the vehicle. It is so much easier to hit a fair price if you do so because it is almost assured that the buyer will try and knock a few (hundred or thousand) pounds off of your asking price.

Let the buyer open with an offer. Do not mention any other price than the one you have advertised. It is so easy to say something to the effect, "I am willing to go as low as such and such amount". This is a fatal error. Let the buyer start with an opening bid then tell make a counter offer. Your counter offer should be closer to your asking price than the price that you are offered and always make a comment about something in the car that is worth them paying your asking price. For instance if the car has brand new tyres let the buyer know that the tyres are brand new as you make your counter offer. If I intend to sell my car fast I will actually try and highlight the aspects of the car that may be an improvement on its stock standard condition (such as the stereo if I have installed an improvement).

If you are having trouble coming to an agreement on a price you might want to offer to remove certain components of the car. To sell my car fast I will sometimes take the buyers offer on a proviso. Using the stereo as an example, you may tell the buyer that you can accept his offer if you can take out the stereo. That way you can sell the stereo elsewhere and make up the difference in the price.
